What is the True Meaning of Valentine’s Day?

Valentine’s Day is one of my favourite holidays. I get to spoil my family and friends and shower them with love and joy. Whether that be through gift giving, making them something delicious or even just spending intentional time with them, I love Love and I love spreading Love.

The history of Valentine’s Day is marked by many ancient stories, traditions and myths that we can trace back all the way to the early days of Rome (you can read more here). Whatever story you choose to believe, the main theme that’s been carried through the centuries is that we all need a day to celebrate love.

As I mentioned, I’m a big fan of celebrating love of any kind everyday of the year. Nevertheless, Valentine’s Day is one of my favourite days because it truly reminds us to pause and tell those in our lives who mean something to us, how much we love them.

I grew up seeing Valentine’s Day not as a romantic holiday, but a day to celebrate love and caring for others. It’s a day to show others you care for them, and to take a moment in our stark cold winter months to pause and reflect on the love I have in my own life.

Now don’t get all bothered and wrapped up in material gifting if that’s not your jam… There are so many other ways to show someone you care and here are just a few other valentine gift ideas that require no money, just your time:

  • Cook them their favourite meal
  • Go for a walk in their favourite place
  • Make them something
  • Spending intentional, quality time with them

Most of the time just showing someone you care simply requires a little time well spent with that person. Be intentional, listen and be there for them. You see there really are endless ways to show love.

The Many Kinds of Love Between Pets and Their Owners

Love comes in all forms, but there’s something uniquely special about the love we share with our pets. It’s pure, uncomplicated, and filled with tail wags, head boops, and cozy snuggles.

Whether you have a loyal dog, a sassy cat, or a tiny hamster who twitches their nose in your direction, the bond between pets and their humans is one of the most beautiful relationships in life.

But what does love look like from our pets’ perspective? Let’s take a closer look at the many ways our furry (or scaly or feathery) companions show us their love.

The Unwavering Loyalty of Dogs

Dogs are the gold standard when it comes to unconditional love.

They don’t care if you had a bad day, if you spilled coffee on your shirt, or if your hair is a mess—they just love you.

Their loyalty is unmatched, and they prove it in so many ways.

They greet you at the door like you’ve been gone for years (even if it was just five minutes), they follow you from room to room, and they curl up next to you just to be close.

That’s love in its purest form.

And let’s not forget those soulful puppy eyes! Dogs have a way of looking at their humans like they hung the moon.

When they lean against you or nuzzle into your hand, it’s their way of saying, “You’re my person, and I love you.”

The Affectionate (and Selective) Love of Cats

Cats might have a reputation for being independent, but when a cat chooses to love you, it’s a big deal.

Unlike dogs, who adore just about everyone, cats are more selective with their affection.

When your feline friend curls up on your lap, headbutts you, or gives you that slow blink of trust, you know you’ve earned their love.

Some cats express their feelings in unexpected ways—like bringing you “gifts” (which may or may not be things you actually want, like toy mice or the occasional sock from your laundry).

Kneading, purring, and rubbing against your legs are all ways they show they care.

And if they follow you around the house but pretend not to be too interested? That’s just their way of saying, “I love you, but let’s not make a big deal about it.”

The Quiet Companionship of Small Pets

Love isn’t always loud and obvious. For small pets like rabbits, guinea pigs, birds, and even reptiles, love often comes in quieter forms.

A bunny that flops over near you, a guinea pig that squeaks excitedly when you enter the room, or a bird that sings to you—these are all signs of trust and affection.

Even a bearded dragon who slowly blinks at you is showing their version of love!

The Healing Power of Pet Love

No matter the species, pets have an incredible ability to sense emotions.

They snuggle close when we’re sad, celebrate with us when we’re happy, and remind us to enjoy life’s simple pleasures.

Their love is healing, comforting, and always there when we need it most.

The love between pets and their owners is a special kind of magic—one filled with joy, companionship, and a whole lot of cuddles. And honestly, who could ask for more?

The Emotional Benefits of Pet Love

There’s something truly magical about the way pets love us.

Whether it’s a dog’s excited greeting at the door, a cat’s soothing purr, or even a hamster’s happy little squeaks, our furry (or feathered or scaly) friends have a way of making life a little brighter.

But beyond the daily joy they bring, pets also offer incredible emotional benefits that can make a real difference in our well-being.

One of the biggest ways pets help us emotionally is by reducing stress.

Studies have shown that simply petting an animal can lower cortisol levels, the hormone responsible for stress. That’s why after a long, exhausting day, curling up with your pet can feel like an instant mood booster. Their presence alone has a calming effect, reminding us to slow down, breathe, and enjoy the little moments.

Pets also have an amazing ability to sense our emotions.

Ever notice how your dog snuggles up to you when you’re feeling down? Or how your cat suddenly becomes extra affectionate when you’re stressed? They pick up on our feelings and often provide comfort without saying a word.

For people struggling with anxiety, depression, or loneliness, having a pet can be a game-changer. Their unconditional love provides reassurance and stability, making tough days a little easier to handle.

Beyond emotional support, pets encourage routines and responsibility, which can be incredibly helpful for mental health.

Taking care of a pet—whether it’s feeding them, taking them for walks, or just spending time together—creates structure in daily life. That consistency can be grounding, providing a sense of purpose and accomplishment, even on days when motivation feels hard to find.

And let’s not forget the joy factor! Pets bring laughter into our lives, whether it’s a dog’s goofy zoomies, a cat’s fascination with a cardboard box, or a parrot trying to mimic your voice. Their silly antics remind us not to take life too seriously and to find happiness in the simple things.

Fun Ways to Celebrate Love with Your Pet

There are endless ways to show your pet how much you love them, and the best part is that they don’t expect anything fancy—just your time and attention.

But if you want to go the extra mile and celebrate your bond, here are some fun ways to do it!

A special treat or homemade snack is always a winner.

Whether it’s baking DIY dog biscuits, whipping up a cat-friendly tuna treat, or preparing a fresh fruit snack for your bunny, a little something extra can make your pet’s day.

Just be sure to use pet-safe ingredients!

Another fun idea is planning a pet-friendly adventure.

Dogs love a trip to the park, beach, or even just a long scenic walk in a new place.

If you have a cat who enjoys exploring, consider setting up a safe outdoor enclosure or taking them out in a pet backpack.

Even small pets can get a change of scenery—setting up a fun play area with tunnels and toys can be an exciting new experience for them.

If your pet is more of a homebody, a cozy cuddle session and quality time might be the perfect way to celebrate.

Grab a soft blanket, put on a movie, and let your pet curl up beside you.

Many pets just want to be near their favorite person, so simply being present and giving them undivided attention is a meaningful way to show love.

For an extra cute touch, consider a mini pet photoshoot! Dress your pet up in a cute bandana, use natural light for the best shots, and capture adorable memories together.

You could even turn the photos into a keepsake like a framed picture or a custom pet portrait.

And of course, nothing beats a new toy or enrichment activity. Cats love puzzle feeders and feather wands, dogs go crazy for interactive toys, and even small pets like rabbits or guinea pigs enjoy new tunnels and chew toys.

Keeping them mentally and physically engaged is one of the best ways to show you care.

No matter how you celebrate, the most important thing is to cherish the love you share with your pet.

Whether it’s through belly rubs, playtime, or simply sitting side by side, the bond between you and your pet is one of life’s greatest joys.

So go ahead—spoil them a little and soak up all the tail wags, purrs, and happy moments!
